97 Underground is a radio station - or a phenomenon, as some fans refer to it - that began in
the Spring of 1982 at Dundalk High School in Baltimore. Located on the FM dial at 96.7,
"The Underground" began as an evening only format run by students at Dundalk High School.
The format was predominantly Classic Rock with a hard edge. Classic Rock formats did not appear anywhere else on the radio until 1984. In 1985,
97 Underground went off the air...
but not for long.

With Hard Rock and Heavy Metal as popular as ever and no radio outlets playing this music,
97 Underground part II began its assault on Baltimore radio in the Spring of 1987.
The format mixed new and Classic Hard Rock and played some local music too.

Baltimore radio listeners first heard Metallica, Queensryche, Megadeth, Whitesnake, Tesla, Soundgarden and Jane's Addiction on 97 Underground. Also, 97 Underground was the first radio station in the United States to play Guns and Roses, Pantera, White Zombie, Child's Play and Wrathchild America. For the next 3 years, 97 Underground brought many of these bands to the Baltimore area to play live while setting the tone nationally for Hard Rock music.

Both times, 97 Underground was way ahead of the curve with cutting edge programming serving
an audience who had nowhere to tune in for its favorite music.

No corporate radio ownership...still local...same attitude...97 Underground is back!
